VEHICLE FERRIES (CABLE)
Cabel vehicle ferries are used to transport road vehicles across rivers and harbours where no normal road bridge is available. They are typically used where traffic volume does not warrent the construction of a road bridge or the normal road bridge is out of use due to repair. They are propelled by friction drive on one or two steel cables laid across the river or harbour. These cables do not interfer with normal shipping operations as they lay on the bottom while the ferry is not operating. Cable vehicle ferries need to provide a large clear deck area for vehicles and shallow draft so they can come very close to shore.
Stewart Marine Design has designed a range of cable vehicle ferries from 10.0m to 45.0m in length. These ferries have mainly been built in steel, however some have been built in aluminium alloy where there were severe draught restrictions or other specialised needs to be met. As well as having to meet the ship owner's transport needs, we ensure they are easy to construction and and provide low ongoing maintenance.
