PASSENGER FERRIES
Passenger ferries are vessels designed to carry mainly people in unberthed accommodation. Some passenger ferries also include provission for the carrage of vehicles. Voyage length are normally of short duration (under 12 hours). There has been a tendancy over recent years for faster passenger ferries. Although faster passenger ferries are normally less economical to run, people have demonstrated that they are willing to pay a premium for a faster service. Because passengergers are a "low density" cargo, multi-hull vessels are popular as passenger ferries because of their larger deck areas relative to their length. Multi-hulls however, are not as economical to operate as a well designed mono-hull vessel.
Stewart Marine Design has designed a range of passenger ferries over the years from 6.0m displacement river ferries to 45.0m gas-turbine powered high-speed ocean going catamarans. These ferries have mainly been built in aluminium and FRP, however some have been built in steel and timber where high speed was not required and/or there were no severe draught restrictions.
