DUMB LIGHTERS (BARGES)
Dumb lighters (barges) are used extensively on rivers and lakes and in near-shore areas. Their purposes are varied, from transporting liquid or dry bulk cargo to the transporting of containers, palletized or general cargo, and vehicles. They are also used as floating work and accommodation platforms. Being are relatively cheap to build for their deadweight and are always in demand.
Stewart Marine Design has designed a range of dumb lighters over the years from 12.0m to 35.0m in length. These lighters have mainly been built in steel, however some have been built in aluminium alloy where there were severe draught restrictions or other specialised needs to be met. Another popular construction material for dumb lighters is ferro-cement.
