Naval Architecture is the art and science of designing ships, submarines and other floating structures. This design work includes hull form; layout, habitability and appearance; all structural elements; and machinery, electrical, piping, steering and propulsion systems. A Naval Architect is a professional engineer who specialises in this complex and demanding design field.

Marine Surveying is the certification of the safety and suitability of a ship for its intended operation. Other areas covered in marine surveying include construction supervision; on-hire/off hire surveys; cargo surveys; pre-purchase surveys; and insurance assessing and evaluation.

Stewart Marine Design is an Australian company that has been involved for over 25 years with sea transport solutions for commercial shipping, boats and luxury yachts built of steel, aluminium, fibreglass, timber, copper-nickel and ferro-cement (see notes on ferro-cement).
